Client Stories – Darmstadt World Heritage

In southern Hesse in Germany, the city of Darmstadt is celebrating its rich cultural heritage with a vibrant outdoor advertising campaign. Bay Media had the privilege of bringing this vision to life, highlighting our growing presence in the German market.

The Client

Darmstadt Marketing GmbH, tasked with promoting the city’s attractions and events, sought an effective way to create a connection between the UNESCO World Heritage site Mathildenhöhe and the city centre. Their goal was to draw attention to a significant exhibition while enhancing the urban landscape.

The Campaign

The campaign centers around promoting the exhibition “4–3–2–1 Darmstadt“, a showcase of Darmstadt’s artistic legacy in the newly renovated exhibition building at Mathildenhöhe. This exhibition, which took place from September 20-22, 2024, marked an important moment in the city’s cultural calendar.

Strategic Placement

On September 12, 2024, we installed striking street banners at key locations in Darmstadt, strategically placed to maximize visibility and impact. The banners were installed on and around Friedensplatz as well as along Pützerstraße, creating a visual path between the city centre and the exhibition venue.

Banners near Friedensplatz target the busy city centre, capturing the attention of locals and visitors alike, while the banners on Pützerstraße effectively guide people to Mathildenhöhe where the exhibition is held.

Design and Impact

The banner features a clean, minimalist design with a light blue background. It prominently displays the vertically oriented text “DA staunst du,” with “DA” serving both as part of the phrase and as an abbreviation for Darmstadt. At the top, there’s a reference to Darmstadt’s World Heritage site Mathildenhöhe.

Local Partnerships

Implementing this campaign required collaboration with local authorities. We secured the necessary permissions in advance of the campaign, enabling us to work effectively within local regulations while expanding into this new market.

The Mathildenhöhe

The Mathildenhöhe, Darmstadt’s crown jewel and UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021, plays a central role in this campaign. This artists’ colony, established in the early 20th century under the patronage of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse, represents a pivotal moment in the development of modern architecture and design.

The current exhibition “4–3–2–1 Darmstadt” in the newly renovated exhibition building offers a journey through 200 years of Darmstadt’s art history. It showcases significant works from the city’s art collection, including paintings, sculptures, graphics, photographs, and video art, with a special focus on previously unexhibited works by female artists.

Leveraging Experience

Our recent success with the EURO 2024 campaign in Munich positioned us well for this project in Darmstadt. The experience gained from working in German cities has been invaluable in understanding local nuances and delivering a campaign that resonates with both residents and visitors.

Looking Ahead

The street banners will remain in place for many months, providing long-term visibility for the exhibition and contributing to the city’s vibrant atmosphere. This extended presence enables maximum impact, guiding visitors through the winter months and into spring.
